SENTENCE Correction for GMAT with Csquare Learnings-GMAT Training Center

Sentence Correction on GMAT comes with a lot of burden…lots of rules to learn. With the maximum number of Questions (15-17 Q’s) hailing from this section…test takers have no choice but to spend a lot of time mastering this section.

Csquare Learnings-a pioneer GMAT Training Center (Bangalore & Hyderabad) is obliged to share few Sentence Correction (SC) tips with all the GMAT aspirants.

1) Read LESS à Score MORE

We often read the Q multiple times in order to understand the sentence. Remember GMAT is testing your correction abilities and not understanding of the concept.

Csquare Learnings through its Classroom & Online sessions emphasizes on “Reading the SC Question only once, NOT to understand”

Emphasize more on the answer choices, in order to find the correct answer and score higher.

2) TOP-Down Approach

We tend to read each answer choice at once to understand and eliminate.

Remember understanding the answer choice is not important than finding the difference between each answer choices.

Csquare Strategy emphasizes on doing a VERTICAL COMPARISON of your answer choices (Move your eyes from top to bottom and NOT left to Right). This helps you clearly differentiate each choice from the other, to choose the comparatively BEST.

3) WRONG is GOOD.

Do not try to find the correct option, always try to find a flaw and identify Wrong Answer choices in order to eliminate them.

Wrong Answer choices help you arrive at the correct answer. Hence WRONG is GOOD: P

4) GMAT Minus GRAMMAR

A common myth is SC needs you to learn vast and time consuming English grammar.

Actually SC on GMAT is based on 35-40 rules. Make sure you learn the APT rules to avoid pressurizing your mind with too much information.

For example:

“We believe that Grammar is an integral part of SC” .This sentence looks and sounds perfect. Whereas this is wrong on GMAT.

‘Believe that’ is a wrong idiom…To avail the list of correct Idioms…

“I decided to appear for GMAT sometime in August 2009. Some of my friends suggested that I look up for some good institute for preparing for GMAT. Initially, I thought that I could manage it on my own. So, I started to prepare for it on my own. My job was hectic enough at that time and managing GMAT preparations proved to be quite a challenge and I felt like I was beating around the bush without much progress. I then decided to look for some guidance. I tried to look for institutes in Bangalore through internet and found Csquare right at the top of my search. I looked through various forums and most of them were unanimous in their view that Csquare has the best to offer when it comes to GMAT. Hence, I took the leap of faith and joined Csquare. Right after the first class (on SC), all my doubts melted away and I was sure that I have come to the right place. This feeling got re-inforced more and more as I attended more and more classes.

On the verbal front, the strategies taught in the class for SC worked really well for me. Towards the end of my preparation, I was getting almost all SC questions right within the manageable time and all that was just by blindly following the “GMATically correct” SC rules taught in the class. The strategies offered for RC were also quite unique and if one really followed them, there was little chance of going wrong. I did my best to practice that and I got comfortable with it as the time progressed. On CR, the strategy to classify questions into various types was equally good. However, I somehow paid least attention to practicising CR and thats what probably led to some dip in my verbal score.

On Quantitative front, I found the strategies taught in the class very helpful in solving the questions quickly and accurately. Specially, with the kind of approach taught to solve DS questions it was really difficult to go wrong there. Quant is not just about solving a question, it is also about solving it quick enough and with least amount of effort and that is what was taught to us in the quant class. The classes were quite focussed and dealt with a very good pool of questions. So, quant became friendly by the end of it all.

I ultimately managed to score 710 (Quant – 50, Verbal – 36). I would like to thank Csquare for all the assistance and support. Special thanks to Rashmi and Kirtin for all their help and motivation.”

RC on GMAT is The Most Daunting area for most of the students on GMAT. In fact we are sure no one will disagree with us if I say RC is essentially boring, time consuming and more than anything it is PAIN.

During many occasions in our classes we have come across students who barely have any reading skills; added to this if you get a topic that you don’t like (which normally happens) then it is gone for a total mess.

Therefore, at Csquare Learnings, we adopt strategy that will help you to breeze through the RC gently yet get high accuracy. We will deal with few important points and tips that will help you to fine tune your RC skills.

1. You will come across topics that you MAY NOT be able to comprehend no matter how many times you read.
RULE No 1: STOP TRYING TO UNDERSTAND.

2. Remember every passage is essentially a STORY, no matter what subject it is written on. And every story is built on a Story line or a basic Structure.
RULE No 2: DECIPHER THE STORY LINE (NOT the STORY Details).

3. As human brain stores lots of things in the temporary memory locations, we tend to forget things very fast. Realize the fact that your brain is biggest enemy; hence don’t rely on your brain.
RULE No 3: PUT YOUR STORY LINE ON PAPER QUICKELY (as you decipher it)

4. GMAT has some unique talent to make simple things complex. More often than less, we tend to get scared by looking at the question itself. Realize what GMAT is trying to do to you by throwing that question at you.
RULE No 4: DON’T GET CARRIED AWAY BY THE LOOK AND FEEL OF THE QUESTION. INSTEAD BREAK IT INTO PIECES TO RELATE TO YOUR STORY LINE

5. Unlike many other exams, GMAT carefully designs its Answer Choices based on Human Psychology. It is very easy to Fall for trap in the pursuit of finding Right Answer Choice.
RULE No 5: DON’T TRY TO FIND RIGHT ANSWER CHOICE; INSTEAD INDENTIFY WRONG ONES AND KICK THEM OUT.

Ensure you eliminate the wrong answer choices for the same reason that GMAT does – Read explanations carefully.

In conclusion, if you want to impress your BOSS you need to understand his likes and dislikes. Similarly if you want to CONQUER RCs ON GMAT, you MUST understand your enemy-GMAT’s likes and dislikes. There is NO correct way or wrong way in this game; it is just the GMAT WAY.
SO KNOW IT. CONQUER IT.

PS: For practice please stick to Official Guides.

Csquare Learnings invites you to experience GRE -an exam that can help you in your undecided times. Csquare Learnings is now obliged to serve all the GRE aspirants with intense power packed 35 hours of classroom training. You now have the opportunity to be trained by some of the most experienced trainers in INDIA.

Our GRE course gives you:

Outstanding Techniques to Master Vocabulary

20 individual (Section) Tests

20 full length Practice test & Discussions

5 full length Online Tests

For just Rs 6,500/-

The managing directors of Admissions are happy to broaden and extend the requirements to give all MBA candidates the option of submitting results either from GRE or GMAT. We at Csquare Learnings are equally delighted to provide GRE Training classes along with GMAT.As more and more business schools look to diversify the candidate pool for their MBA and graduate management programs, they’re turning to the GRE General Test. Thus, candidates are now no longer required to take both GMAT and GRE because Harvard and Wharton along with 250 B-Schools across the world now acknowledges that a candidate who has thrived the GRE can thrive their MBA program too. This move will help many candidates who apply for MBA and at the same time looking for many other courses as probable options, admission to which requires clearing GRE.

The decision is consistent with B-Schools ‘s move to find business leaders out of the purview of traditional business schools, that is from consultant firms, college business programs and investment banks. It also establishes that GRE is a credible competitor to GMAT and therefore more business schools are likely to follow suit very soon and allow GRE scores as a credible option for their admission procedures.

To compare GRE with GMAT , click on http://www.csqrl.com/GRE/Index.php

GRE the most widely accepted graduate admissions test that tests the students on their abstract argumentative abilities. The GRE® General Test is accepted for admission to university master’s , doctoral degree programs and a rapidly increasing number of MBA programs. What’s more, GRE test scores are valid for five years after taking the exam. The GRE is less expensive than other graduate admissions tests used by business schools.

Csquare learnings happens to be my only institute where I got a comprehensive coverage in Verbal. Prior to Csqrl, it was more of self study, various forums/groups on Net. I belong to the majority who believes in having many books and resource material. To begin with, it was fine. “The more you practice, the better” was modified and rephrased to ” The more study material the better”. So, when I got the study material from Csqrl… I wondered whether some 100-150 odd page material will be sufficient. And it turned out to me more than that. I took web-based classes as Csqrl is not in Delhi. So after my office I used to have a 2 hour class via webex. With all the rules and formulas(csqrl special) and brilliant presentation by Rashida – I could see a big improvement in verbal. The rules related to Tenses, 3-point rule, Its test, S-test and the deadly FIRE. The best thing about these rules are.. they are much clear and adaptable than the explanations of OG.

Prepration
This was the sad part for me. It wasn’t the 1st attempt I had this score…it took me a while… with a busy work schedule, at times night shift gave me quite a challenge.

Pre- Csquare learnings
I gave GMAT thrice with a best of 560. My initial scores in verbal were 26-28, with stable 50 in quant. Verbal was a huge let down. During this time I used Manhattan, Princeton, Kaplan and 800 series and not to forget 1000series for SC. It was always a “fix” solution while solving these materials rather than having a proper answer. The illusion of having good preparation came due to solving these materials again and again…which made me think that I’m good to go for real exam.

Post- Csquare learnings
It was very hard to believe that the very few pages of booklets along with few photocopy material would be sufficient. But after my 1st class.. I knew it was different study material. I simply completed my assignments in the manner I was asked to… the review sessions helped me a lot to fine tune and adapt to the particular rules Rashida had.I could devote 2-3 hrs on weekdays and 8-9 on weekends for my studies. Took lots of Gmat Prep exams by deleting the logs so that I don’t see many repeat questions.I have extensively used OG guides and the Csqrl notes for Verbal.. as I was doing quant on my own… I followed books by Indian authors…on quant analysis…. it was full of shortcuts which I find handy… Though, my final quant doesn’t justify my confidence in maths, but I got 4 questions wrong at first place… and from there on it was a catch up. So a 46 is not that bad. A 37 in verbal is a jackpot !!!

Only problem (blessing in disguise rather) with Csqrl is – Not many know about Csqrl. Thanks to my good “google” skills.. and after my 3rd attempt wherein I really wanted help in verbal.. I found Csqrl. I would have saved time had I got to know about it earlier..
